Hello all! Here you will find useful prompts that will have you in God’s word creating stories and images that can minister to others. These prompts are geared towards writers and artists. First, you’ll be introduced to the specific theme. Then, you will find the prompt. Each prompt has three questions attached, story narrowing questions. These questions are here to help you narrow down the creative choices because what is the point of a prompt if it does not help direct the creation with efficiency. Some of these questions will also come with suggestions. This will help create an efficient and effective creative session.
#1. Favorite Bible Verse
What is your favorite Bible verse? Pick your favorite verse, most memorable verse, or the verse that you have recently memorized to be the basis of your next creation.
Questions:
- Why is this the verse you chose? Use that why as either a scene or theme.
- What does the scripture mean? Map that meaning out as a plot line.
- Have a character that is actively trying to memorize the chosen verse. Is this verse meant to minister to the character memorizing the verse or other characters in the life of the character memorizing the verse?
- Is your story set in a contemporary, historical, sci-fi, or fantasy setting?
#2. Bible Story
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
2 Timothy 3:16 (NASB)
Pick a Bible Story and read it. Then create a picture, image or short story that encapsulates the purpose, meaning and/or theme of the Bible story.
Questions:
- What is the purpose, meaning and/or theme of the Bible Story?
- How can that purpose, meaning and/or theme be created into one image?
- If this is a short story, is this a retelling or a lesson from the Bible Story type scenario.
#3. Proverbs
Proverbs has thirty-one chapters. A chapter a day for some months and extra for others. So, look at the calendar, what is today’s date. Whatever the day, read that chapter and start writing.
Questions:
- What verse stood out to you? Make that the theme of your creation.
- Is your main character also reading this on the same date as the chapter number? (ie. reading Chapter 15 on the 15th of a given month)
- Is there only one main character?
- Is your story set in a contemporary, historical, sci-fi, or fantasy setting?
#4. Verse of the Day
Choose a platform that posts verses of the day. Here are a few places you can look:
- PIZAZZLYN
- YouVersion Bible App or online site
Questions:
- For a story: Why did you pick this prompt? Make your character chose something for the same reason and make the choice a main part of the story.
- For a poem: Can a blackout poem work with this verse? If not, summarize the meaning/theme in one word. Can you rhyme that word with three others?
- For an image: Do you want an image that states the verse or an image that encapsulates the meaning of the verse?
Try putting these to work. Whatever the use, I pray its helpful. Remember, as a storyteller, it is important to exercise your God-given storytelling abilities with his word. I hope you enjoy!
