Writer’s block is when someone has no idea what to write. This may be due to burn out or even a momentary lack of ideas. Whether you are currently in a moment of writer’s block or you are looking for what to do if you ever have writer’s block, this article is for you. Here you will learn five efficient solutions to get over you writer’s block and start writing again.
ONE: Writing Prompts
If you are really in the depths of writer’s block, maybe try a writing prompt. Writing prompts are ideas specifically for writers. It could be a sentence, a question, a paragraph, scenario, theme or anything that gives a writer an idea for a starting point. I would suggest writing prompts that have questions to narrow your story options. One example is Useful Writing Prompts for Your Next Creation: Summer Themed. These sorts of prompts give a scenario in a sentence and three questions that will help you direct your story and narrow down the options when writing. You can find all of our writing prompts here.
TWO: Writing Challenges
Whether it is a new or old writing challenge, just give it a try. One of the most common writing challenges is in NaNoWriMo. It stands for National Novel Writing Month. It is a challenge that is usually held in November. The goal is to write a novel in thirty days. This equals 50,000 words. While it is traditionally a November writing challenge, feel free to use the same idea for whenever you want. The great thing about writing challenges is that there are usually some type of timeline or creative parameters that limit the writing options. This can help you write a focused and structured creation. If the challenge does not come with an idea prompt, just use a writing prompt in conjunction with the writing challenge. THREE: Listen to Music
Music is a great source of inspiration. I have personally gotten some of my best writing ideas while sitting and listening to music. Whether it is a piece of music or a song, it does not really matter. Just listen to the piece or song and write what you imagine while listening. Maybe a lyric will stick out and give you an idea. Maybe a melody will create an image in your head that would be a good jumping off point. Just listen and write whatever comes. A good source of random musical pieces can be found on YouTube. You can find some on the channel PIZAZZLYN. One of my favorites is Dream. You can also find another song to try, Shout Your Praise, below by Z’Kaye, a new Christian singer.
FOUR: Draw your surrounding and create a scene for that drawing
This is a great way to get your creative juices flowing. When you are drawing, you are taking creative choices that will help pull you out of your writer’s block once you move to the next step. The next step is creating a scene from the drawing. Whether your drawing is a multi-million dollar masterpiece or chicken scratch, just take the drawing and create the scene. Maybe you want to write it like a script, or a short story. All that really matters is that you put whatever is happening in the drawing down in words in some sort of storytelling format. Whether you use this as a writing exercise or a starting point for a new story, it should help you escape from the land of writer’s block.
FIVE: Create a mock YouTube video as a different person or character
Yes, I know we are all adults here. But you know what, we are supposed to be like little children. Some of my most creative ideas came from when I was a little kid playing make believe as some random character. Whether I was stranded on an island one day or the world’s most powerful superhero the next day, it didn’t matter. Playing make believe or playing games as my family called it, created an endlessly creative environment and an endless amount of creative ideas to fall back on. Even now, I can step back into worlds that were created over a decade ago during these games. That is essentially what recording this video will assimilate. For the time of recording, you are a completely different person with a different life, maybe you have some parallels, maybe you don’t. Maybe you’re from a different world or a different time. Use this as your playground and see what creativity comes from it and how it helps you get over your writer’s block. Maybe it’s not your next big story, but it should help you get back to writing.
